WEEK 2 BLOG (8/30 - 9/5)

It has been revealed that Washington Nationals pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg has severely injured his elbow and will have to have Tommy John reconstructive surgery.

Being only 22 years old and in his first season out of college, many believe that the Nationals rushed him to the majors too quickly, resulting in the injury which will take 12 to 18 months to recover from.  Some people believe that he was brought up because he was ready.  Others believe that he was brought up to boost the Nationals low revenue / ticket sales.

Regardless of whether he was ready or not, should he have been brought to the majors in his first professional season?  (due by 9/5)

  1. No matter if Stasburg was brought up too early, he would have had a good chance of getting an injury anyway. At the speed and consistency that he pitched, someone whould have to wonder when, not it he would get injured. As for the decision by the National orgnaization, the reason could go both ways. The Nationals found a young pitcher who they thought was ready to play and were able to boost ticket sales. The Nationals were not expecting or intending for Strasburg to get hurt.

  2. Yes I do believe that he should have because he is said to be one of the best pitchers in todays game. The Nationals are one of the worst teams in the league so they need all the help they can get. One person doesn't change a bad team into a good team but a player like Stasburg it sure helps. The Nationals need help so they need new players to play right away which is why Stasburg was played. I believe it was start because the Nationals need wins.

  3. The Nationals were stupid when they brought up him because he was still too young to play in the majors. He didnt have enough expeirence to be in the MAjors pitching. It wasnt Strasburg's fault for getting injured it was the Nationals fault. They should have let him play for a couple of years then bring him up and noe he is out for over a year.

  4. The Nationals made a move that they had to make in bringing up Stephen Strasburg. The Nationals have been awful every year they have existed. They needed a boost in revenue and a boost in fan support. The night he made his first start, he sold out the building. It created buzz around the Nationals organization for the first time in a long time. It made everyone want to tune in and see how the Nationals did everytime he pitched. The Nationals made the right move. It was just highly unlucky that their star got hurt.

  5. When you move up to the professional league of any sport your already taking a risk of getting yourself injured regardless of how long you have been in the league. Considering how fast major league pitchers pitch something like an injury would have come up some point in strasburgs career, so in my opinion he was ready he just had an unfortunate injury. Besides that fact due to some of his performances he seemed more then ready to move up. He just had what all professional athletes risk, an injury that hopefully doesn't affect his performance.

  6. For some players it is a good idea do move up. In this particular season it was an extremely dumb decision. This player was projected to be a major impact in the mlb. For a team that would be in a spot in the playoffs they could have brought him up. The Nationals are not going to make the playoffs this year so they should have prepared Strasburg for the next season where they have the number one draft pick, Bryce Harper added to the team. These players if healthy would help them be a major playoff contending team. Their shotsj are gone now that he is injured because he was brought up prematurely.

  7. There is no doubt that he should have been brought up. He is an all star calliber pitcher. He is a Cy Young calliber pitcher. Even at age 22 he was better than most of the pitchers in the league. This kind of thing can happen to any pitcher. it just so happens that it happened to him, in his first year playing. but there is no doubt with his sick pitching and his capability to strike people out that he should have been called up to the big leagues.

  8. ya i dont see why not. He was a good pitcher and the nationals needed all the help they could get. He would have been injured regardless of pitching in college or in the majors. However, its unfortunate that the nationals spent the money on a good player who now cant play for another 18 months.

  9. I think that he was brought up because his talent was needed on the nationals pitching staff. he is an all star calliber pitcher and his role in the line up was for the better of the team. the fact that he was brought up to early didnt effect the injury. whether he was called up or not he was still at the same risk.

  10. I think that no matter when he was brought up he was always going to have a risk of getting hurt. I don't think it had anything to do with ticket sales. He was a talented player and it was right to bring him up. And he will still be a talented player when he comes back in 12-18 months. Although it is very unfortunate that it will take that long for him to get back in the game.

  11. I think bringing strasburg Up to the majors was a good idea. Whether he was ready or not doesn't really correlate to his injury. He couldve got injured in the minors as well. I think bringing him up was to boost ticket sales. Maybe he was overplayed. It is just very unfortunate that a talent like this can be out like that in an instant. Who knows if he will ever be back to his natural form?

  12. He would've had the chance to be hurt anyway. I don't think the decision to bring him up to the majors was the reason he was hurt. It doesn't matter if he was ready or not him being hurt and being ready have nothing to really do with each other.

  13. The Nationals made a move that was both good for their team and their sales. Strasburg was not forced to play, he chose to. No professional athlete can play and not expect to be injured at one point or another. The fact that he got hurt so early on is an unlucky incident.

  14. I don't think that it was a bad decision at all to move Strasburg up to the major league. Every athlete knows and takes the risk that they can get hurt. They know that injuries happen and they are bound to be injured a few times or more in their career.

  15. I think he was brought up for both reasons. Who doesnt want to see a 22 year old rookie throwing a 100 mph? I think he was ready to be brought up to the majors even though he is a rookie. This injury could happen later in his carreer but he is lucky it happend this early so he can recover faster. Even though he will not be ready for 12-18 months, he can only get better than he is over that time.

  16. I believe that Steven Strasburg was treated fine with regards to his time in his first season. He was expected to become one of the greatest pitchers ever. The Nationals were still very careful with him also. They took him out whenever he had the least of problems. This injury was always coming because of the stress he puts on his arm every day.

  17. I believe that Steven was fine to join the Majors so early. He was obviously good enough and could have been great. Stuff happens and was no ones fault. I think he was ready, but he just go hurt and it was a coincidence.

  18. I think that it was a good move for the Nationals to bring Strasburg up. The Nationals have not had a good record the past few years and they probably thought that bringing up a good ace would be a good idea. It ended up being a good move because he pitched very well, up untill he got hurt.

  19. Yes, could have as easily been injured in the minor league as he was in the major league. He would have been the same athlete in either or.
