It has been announced that pastor Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida is planning to hold a mass burning of the Quran...

This is in response to what happens in many other countries of the world with items that symbolize America and Christianity. However, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, has warned that doing so will only endanger the lives of U.S. troops throughout the world.

What are your thoughts on this idea? Will it really have it's desired impact, or will it just do what General Petraeus says? Is this the type of thing that should be protected by "freedom of speech?" Does doing something like this prove a point or does it just "bring us down to their level?" (due by 9/12)
I think that pastor Terry Jones could have gotten his point accross in a less-offensive way. Burning the Quran is like burning the Bible, and Christians everywhere would be offended. I think this may bring harm on troops, making it not worth the risk. I think that a truly Christian pastor would put the safety of soldiers before his want to make a point.
ReplyDeletePersonally I feel that this is a very dumb and barbaric idea. Those people in the world that have chosen in the past to burn out country's flag are the same people who chose to run planes into the Pentagon and World Trade Center. Why would anyone want to be anywhere near their level? I know I wouldn't ever want to be compared to those people. I think that the pastor has the right to do whatever he wants but anyone who joins him to do it is just as barbaric and animalistic as him. I feel this puts our troops at a great risk and if he doesn't care about our troops enough to keep this kind of thing to himself then he doesn't deserve to call himself an American.
ReplyDeleteWhat pastor Terry Jones did was reallly stupid. Its like burning a bible or american flag. If you burnt a bible or american flag a whole religion and nation would be affended and could cause serious harm. There are easier ways to protest events or conflicts and burning something as serious like a Quran is way out of hand. General Petraeus is correct because we dont know how people will be affended and we dont know waht reactions could and will be. The pastor was an idiot for even thinking about it and his actions could cause serious harm.
ReplyDeleteIt does in a way bring the United States down to other countries level. Yet, it should be allowed under the countries freedom of speach. Yes government officials can chime in of the subject, but in the end it is the pastor's final choice. It is a good thing that the pasor is giving his opinion, yet it should be given in a different way such as speaches. Also, the General has a credible point. If word were to get out to Middle Eastern countries, they could become even more aggresive then they are now. It is not worth the pastor's time. It will not make any difference at all.
ReplyDeleteI think what the reverand did was very idiotic and unnecessarh. If he would have done this then he wouldve started another war with the Muslim religion. Even though we have freedom of speech there has to be limitations on stupidity. What the pastor had thought about doing would not only have gotten himself probably killed but many troops overseas. Troops overseas that heard about the threat were very scared because if it wouldve happend, they wouldve been on their own with a whole bunch of angry Muslims.
ReplyDeleteThis whole ordeal was a publicity stunt for Pastor Terry Jones's church. I do not believe he was ever going to burn the Quran. I believe he just wanted to get his church and community some attention. I believe he was just trying to stir up the pot with muslim religion. He also, I believe, made up this whole agreement he supposedly had with the mosque builder in New York. This is not freedom of speech. This is idiotic.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is an awful idea. Because it will not have its desired affect and it will do exactly what General Petraeus says it will do. Also, it should not be protected by freedom of speech becasue it could potentially harm all of the US troops around the world.
ReplyDeleteI believe the burning of the qurans was a terrible idea. I think it would anger the Muslims even more and put our soldiers over seas at risk. I don't believe this should be protected by the first amendment because its putting peoples lives at risk. I believe this act just lowers us to the level of of the Muslims who burn representations of the U.S.
ReplyDeleteI think that the pastor was making a horrible decision to plan on burning qurans. If he would of went through with that, it would of caused a lot of chaos overseas. I think the American soldiers would have been in danger because of the chaos. This would of proved a point, but it definately would of sparked the radical islams to cause harm against Americans.
ReplyDeleteI think that if this minister were to actually bur the quarans, he would be making a terrible mistake. Why start more trouble? To be honest, it would be for no reason at all. It wouldn't be helping anything and it would just start more problems. I don't think it would even really prove a point. It would simply be a pointless burning that would cause more war and violence.
ReplyDeleteThe idea is stupid, it wouldn't solve anything. If he does do it he will be putting American lifes in trouble and Americans could be getting killed because of it. I know that he may think that he is protected by the Freedom of Speech, butif you look at the big picture it is much different and he is not protected because it is just stupid. If someone does that we would be just like them and there would be more wars and more people will be dying. Overall it is just stupid and no one should do it because if he does do it then he risking a lot of people's lifes.
ReplyDeleteI think the Idea of burning the Qurans, especially as a pastor, is a stupid one. Burning those books would just give the radical islamist another reason to hate us and stur up more trouble, so in the regard to what General Petraeus says the affects would be I believe to be true. I do understand his frustration with the Radical Islamist and what has been going on lately in New York(mosque), however he could have probably found a different way of getting his point across in a way that wouldn't anger anyone. I do believe he has the right to burn those books under the 1st amendment. America is a free country and freedom of speech is one of the many things we value and enjoy in this country. As soon as the stop something as stupid as that by the law basically saying you may not express yourself then we have already lost freedom of speech. The way I see it if he wants to make a fool out of himself in front of the public then just let him .
ReplyDeleteWhat Pastor Jones did really just made America look bad. It's showing the rest of the world that we're stooping down to their level. If other countries or religions want to burn the Bible or American flag, than they're the ones looking like idiots. Pastor Jones should've taken the high road and called off his shinanigans.
ReplyDeleteI think what jones had planned was or is going to bring us down to their level. It's a sensitive topic because many of the terrorists we are fighting are muslim. So, many of us are assuming all Muslims are bad. We need to take the challenge as a country to rise above our stereotypes ad separate terrorism from it's religion. Also, I think this would have threatened our security as a country and for our troops.
ReplyDeleteI think Pastor Jones should not go through with the burning. If he burned it, he would be making matters worse than they are. We have a steroe type that we think all muslims are bad are hate Americans. The burning would threaten all Americans even our troops. Pastor Jones would make America look bad if he did goe through with it.
ReplyDeleteI think the burning of the quran would be a stupid idea. I think the statement from General Patraeus is true because this action would definately offend the muslim community which may lead to retaliation on US troops.
ReplyDeletei think if this will harm troops lives then it should not be done. if the pastor does it anyway then he should not get into trouble. but i also think that this country needs to remember about 9/11 and that islamic extremist should be dealt with harshly.
ReplyDeleteI believe the burning of the Quran will only make it worse for the people in America. Right now a few people hate us in the Middle East, but they will definitely gain hatred if we burn their most sacred item. I believe that if he burns the Quran he will be telling them that their methods are getting to us. We need to be the better example. However, he does have the right to do it because it is a free country.
ReplyDeleteIt would stoop us down to their level of burning the bible or American Flag. It will enrage the Muslims to fight back and potentially cause another 9/11 type of retaliation. Yes, we have the right to say what we want and to express out feelings.
