WEEK 8 BLOG

Controversy has arisen amidst the pending rescue attempt of the trapped miners in Chile.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101009/ap_on_re_us/lt_chile_mine_collapse_23

After being trapped underground for sixty-six days, naturally, everyone involved is eager to return to the surface and go home.  However, there has to be an orderly way to get them all to the surface safely.  Any time drilling takes place, there are risks and things could go wrong.

What criteria should be used in determining what order they will be lifted to the surface?  Should age matter?  Should whether or not they have families make a difference?  Should strength, mental stability, sickness come into play when determining who goes first and who goes last?  (PART I due by 10/14 ; PART II due by 10/17)

  1. I think the chile miners should continue to be patient. they are all going to get out, so they just need to take there time. the sick should go first and if there are any injuries then they should go first as well. like i said, all the miners are going to get out and they just need to be patient and stay calm.

  2. The criteria for the miners to be able to reach the surface shouldnt maker at all, unless there is someone who is desperatly sick and needs help right away. OTher than that nothing else seems to be a factor. The should do rock paper scissors to see who gets out first. They will get out sooner or later.

  3. I agree with andrews statement. They need to relax and stay calm. They should consider themselves to be lucky to still be alive. They have lasted this long and I would think they could last an other day or two.

  4. I think the sick or severly injured should go first. Then after that the order shouldn't matter. There all going to get out in the end its just a matter of when. I think they all need to remain calm and appreciate getting out of the mine no matter what order they leave in.

  5. I believe that the miners should go in order of how healthy they are. The people who are willing to be patient and wait should wait. Everyone of them has loved ones so family does not matter. The people who are mentally unwell should be the ones helped first.

  6. I agree with Jack because the miners should be patient. If they have waited that long they should not start to panic now. It has been a long couple of weeks for them.

  7. I agree with doug. The miners need to be attended to quickly though. If it takes too long the people will go crazy just by human nature. They need to just work together like they have been the last couple of months.

  8. I think what matters most is getting the miners out as quickly as possible. I think the miners know if someone needs to get out before others because of old age or sickness. However, if sorting of who goes first and last stalls the process of getting them out, then it is not worth it. The focus should be getting them all out quickly.

  9. I agree with Mason. All of the miners will get out, so it doesn't matter who goes first except in the case of sickness or injury.

  10. I agree with Fogg. All of the miners have loved ones so it does not matter which of them have families and which do not.

  11. I think the way they are doing it is fine. They allowed the second in command come up first then the least stable next. It would be a good reason to get them out as quick as possible for the other miner's sake any way. The miners so far have been patient so that should not matter much. Over all they seem to be happy just to be alive. One is getting money and a house from his government so that should calm him down some.

  12. I think that the miners should be brought out in a certain order. The strongest should be brought up firs to help if something goes wrong and then the ones who are the sickest next and last should be anyone who is still mentally stable after being down there to be the last out. This order was proposed a few days ago and I feel it is a perfect order.

  13. I agree with Joe the way theyare doing the process it fine. The ones in command should come up first followed by those who aren't stable enough to be down there anymore.

  14. I agree with Andrew. The sick should come up either first or close to the top of the list. Those are the ones who need medical attention now.

  15. I think that the miners who are sick should be the ones to go up first. Than, any members that are injured should go. However, nothing else should matter. The miners are going to get out. They need to just trust the people who are doing their best to get them out as safely as possible.

  16. I agree with Jacob. If arguing about who is going to get out first threatens to stall getting them out, it should not even be discussed.

  17. I also agree with mason. They need to just stay calm and wait their turn. They will all get out eventually.

  18. I believe that the chilean miners should take into effect each of the miner's health. I believe that would be the number one criteria in who gets to come up first. I hope there is not a fight or a scuffle in the midst of them because of who gets to go first. I hope they stay close because of surviving such a horrifying event.

  19. I agree with Kim. Someone who is sick is at a higher risk then someone who is in perfect health.

  20. I agree with Jacob. Its not really about who gets out first, just as long as everyone gets out in a timely manner and safely.

  21. I think that that someone strong should go first so that something breaks that person can help. After a few strong people go then all the weakest and oldest should go up. At the end someone who is mentally fit should go up so that person can handle being alone.

  22. I think that all these factors should all be in play. I think that those who need the most medical attention need to be brought up first. Second, I think that those who have family's should be brought up next. Then, lastly those who can handle to be alone for a little bit, should be the last one who is in the mine.

  23. I actually agree with Josh on the last part of his comment but I think that the weakest should go first so that they can get help first.

  24. I agree with Kim because those who need the most help should be able to get it first. The people that are the strongest should wait because they can be alone or wait longer.

  25. Honestly, I don't really think there should be any particular order. If the operation is going to be safe, it doesn't matter who comes up first or last. The only group who should maybe be taken up first is the physically ill or weak. I think mentally they were all ill from being down there so long.

  26. I disagree with Wyatt. Who is going to judge who is mentally stable or not? And who is going to judge who is the strongest. Even if they are the strongest, how are they going to help if something goes wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Fogg in that all of them have family, so it shouldn't matter in that respect.

  28. I think the criteria for the chillian minners should be plain and simple and just get the minners out. If their is anyone who is sick or severly injuried I believe they should be rescued first. I also believe that age matters in the criteria since age affects how their health is doing in that type of enviroment, so I do believe that some of the oldest should be one of the first to go just in case a problem were to happen, however I think the rest should just step in line and who ever is up is to go back to the service

  29. The strongest should go first and the smallest person went last. AGe and family does not matter. the weakest people should go before the helathy people becaue it will be harder to bring up dead people than live people.

  30. I think the miners who are in most need of medical assistance should go first. The miners should be patient because they will all be able to get out. The healthy should go last because of their condition they are in.

  31. I think that the strongest miners should be lifted to the surface first. This should happen because if anything went wrong with the lift, those men would be the most benificial when it comes to helping out. I also think that the sick should be lifted early too so that they can receive medical treatment quicker.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think it should be for worst health to best health. Age should not matter. Families should not matter it should be by health. yes strength, mental stability, sickness should come into play.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with jason's that the miners with the most need of medical assistance should go first.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with Wyatt because the strongest can help but yet they are still being escorted to the hospital right away. So this would go to say that the strong miners are useless after being saved.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Jack when he says everyone needs to stay calm. If the miners were not calm, it would probably cause some problems with the other miners when they are trying to be patient and get to the surface.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Joe also because everyone goes to the hospital once they get out. The miners that have the biggest health problems should get out first.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with doug when he says that they should do rock paper scissors to decided who goes first. Its only fair that the best RPS player should get to go first

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with johnathon when he says that the oldest should go first because they are the ones who would typically have more health problems than the younger miners.

    ReplyDelete
  39. i agree with doug, the sick need to go first because they need to seek medical help

    ReplyDelete
  40. I agree with jonathan. the purpose to to get the miners out safe

  41. I agree with Masons statement in just getting the miners out at just no particular order at all, unless they are sick and injured. I agree that their shouldn’t be any form of criteria at all.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Jack, they should be happy that they are alive and just be patient and wait their turn

    ReplyDelete
  43. Nick baker also makes a good point by saying that the strongest miners should be lifted to the surface first. He's right by saying that something could happen to the lift or something so then the stronger could help out.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I think that those who have suffered injuries or are sick should be the ones to go first. They should also all realize that they are all going to get out so they should take their time and do it safely.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I agree with Jack that they should be patient and wait their turn. This proccess should be done to ensure the safety of all the miners. It would be a shame if someone got hurt at this point in the rescue.
